DEADLINE TO RETURN FALL SEMESTER
APPEAL:SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2008 AT NOON
The
University of Southern Mississippi considers the Residence Life
Housing Contract to be a legally binding document on the part of the
student and the University. There are certain situations
outlined in the contract by which it is declared void. If a
situation, not listed in the contract, arises under which you are
unable to fulfill the requirements of the contract, the University has
established the Residence Life/Dining Services Appeals Committee to
review your petition.
The appeals committee will schedule
an appeal hearing to review the testimony of those students requesting
to be released from the academic year rental agreement. Any
appeals applicant who fails to appear for the scheduled hearing will
forfeit the right to appeal and will remain responsible for paying the
fees for campus housing and for food services. Appeal hearing
decisions are final.
It is important that the applicant
for appeal completes the attached form and provides any supporting
documentation to be considered (i.e., copy of bills, medical records,
and class/work schedule).
It is at the discretion of the
appeals committee to decide what constitutes grounds for contract
release. Petitions are generally decided based upon the severity
of the circumstances, if there were situations that were not foreseen
and could not have been prevented, and if the student has tried in all
ways possible to meet the requirements of the contract. Please
understand that failure to read the Residence Life Housing Contract is
not a reason for appeal. You should use the resources of your
Hall Director and your Assistant Director before submitting your
petition. Once a petition is submitted it is first reviewed by
the Department of Residence Life.
Any student released from the
housing contract will automatically forfeit the non-refundable
application fee. Students remaining on campus are responsible
for the daily housing rate.
To have your petition considered, you must:
1. Either e-mail, fax, or mail any documentation that proves the
circumstances for which the petition is being filed. If you do not send
this information your petition may be denied on that basis alone. It
is your responsibility to make sure that the Residence Life staff
receives your information.
