Resident Safety

The safety and security of our residents is a top priority of the Residence Life staff. All residence halls offer controlled card access entry that records the date, time and person entering the building. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to midnight, Sunday - Thursday and
11 a.m. to 1 a.m., Friday - Saturday; however, residence hall staff members are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition, University police officers assist with desk operations on a nightly basis and patrol the exterior and interior of our halls. The UPD service kiosks, located in the Freshman Quad and near Vann hall, are operated at strategic times of the evening to provide greater assistance to our students. Students also have access to a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week escort service.

Residence Life at Southern Miss strives to provide a safe environment that allows for the development of student relationships and the building of fun, living-learning communities…an opportunity for friendships that last a lifetime!

EAGLE ALERT

As part of The University of Southern Mississippi’s efforts to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff, the university has implemented a new component to its campus emergency notification system. Through Eagle Alert, students, faculty and staff will be able to receive time sensitive emergency messages via text and voice messages to cell phones and home phones, in addition to the existing avenues of e-mail, the Web page and news media and others.
