Charlotte McLoughlin

Charlotte McLoughlin, interning in New Orleans during March MadnessDescribe yourself...The first thing you should know about me is I LOVE SPORTS! It is definitely the topic of my conversations at least once or twice a day. The most important thing to me is my family and friends. Although we can get a little crazy at times, this is why I love them. Life is short and full of negative things, but my family always manages to have fun whenever we are together. This has inspired me to have a positive outlook on every situation that comes up in my life. I love meeting and talking to new people. Making people laugh makes me so happy. Even though my jokes can be really lame at times, as long as it puts a smile on someone’s face, I am satisfied.

I choose Southern Miss because…I wanted a school not too far from home, but far enough to get the full college experience. Southern Miss’s campus is beautiful and everyone is so nice. I love my professors and how they are always willing to help me get the most out of my college experience. I also wanted a school with a strong athletic program and Southern has proved this year to be very talented in that department!

My favorite thing to do on campus is…Attend sporting events to support my friends! It is so great how much talent we have at this university, and I feel so lucky to be able to enjoy all of these events right here on campus.

What are some cool/fun things you’ve had a chance to experience while at Southern Miss? The C-USA Championship was definitely the highlight of my first semester in college. One of the reasons I choose to attend Southern Miss was because of its strong athletic program. I also have many friends on the football team and to see all of their hard work pay-off and them being able to celebrate such a great season made me so happy!

What activities/organizations are you involved with on campus? SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) and Women’s Golf  Photo of Charlotte McLoughlin, broadcast journalism major

What are your greatest awards and achievements in college thus far? Last semester I was nominated to attend the NCAA Career in Sports Forum. I am honored to be a part of Southern Miss athletics as a member of the Women’s Golf Team (SMTTT!). I also participate in Community Service events such as: reading to kids at a local elementary school, donating can goods during Thanksgiving and putting together shoeboxes for kids during Christmas.

Have you completed an internship, or completed practicum work on a special project while in college? I started interning for WVUE-TV Fox 8 News in New Orleans as a sports producer in August of 2010 and helped out during the 2010 Saints Football season by interviewing players and assisting with editing work. One of the best experiences I have had is attending “Full Court Press” a sports writing seminar put on by the United States Basketball Writers Association during the Final Four in New Orleans where I participated in Final Four press conferences, practices and meetings.  This past December I Interviewed junior golfers at the Tommy Moore Junior Golf Championship, Presented by The Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Why did you choose to major in the School of Mass Communication and Journalism at Southern Miss? I am a total people-person, so I wanted to work with in a field where I would constantly be meeting new people. Ever since I started to get very interested in sports, I realized being a fan wasn’t enough. I started to get such an adrenaline rush when attending sporting events and getting very emotional over sports. I wanted to know more about the teams and athletes and wanted to be the one to break news to the public. This is why I chose to become a sports broadcaster and I cannot wait to get immersed in the business and to learn new things everyday!

When I have free time, I like to…I love going to free concerts with my parents and exploring all New Orleans has to offer. I really enjoy being outside any chance I get and experiencing the unique culture of my city.

I have always wanted to…Travel to exciting places! I have never been out of the United States and I am so interested in the history, cultures and religions of different places all over the world.

My favorite hobby is…Playing golf with friends. There is nothing more relaxing to me than enjoying nature and having fun while adding a little competition to the mix! I also love to work out. It is my natural stress-reliever and makes me feel so healthy and alive!

My dream job would be…Gosh! There are so many options. I would love to one day be a reporter on Sports Center and be able to cover the latest news in sports. I would also love to be a reporter on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumble and be able to share the hard-hitting stories in the sports world. I also wouldn’t mind being an NBA reporter and covering all of the action on and off the court, One day I might even have my own show!!

Favorite quote…“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” – Confucius. Most people’s daily stress comes from their job, which is why I believe this quote simplifies choosing a career. If you do something you love, then you have one less thing to worry about!

After graduation I plan to…I’d like to start at a small news station or by covering a specific professional team, whether its NFL, MLB or NBA. Then, eventually work my way up in the field and work for a big network. I hope to stay living in New Orleans but able to travel for work.

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering Southern Miss…The University of Southern Mississippi has been a very important factor in helping me develop as a person. Southern has it all! From the arts to academics to athletics; we’re pretty good in everything we do! It is such a nurturing place and everyone is here to help you better yourself. The atmosphere is just so positive. There are so many clubs and activities one can participate in and it is so easy to get involved and meet new people. The things you learn here I do not believe you can learn anywhere else!
