Student Spotlight: Jeremy Stricklin

Jeremy Stricklin, senior recording industry production major Describe yourself... I am a senior at USM.  I have never met a stranger in my life and music is the most exciting part of being who I am.

My favorite thing to do on campus is... roam the campus on my bike.  It makes me feel like I own the campus.

I choose Southern Miss because... I’ve always loved Hattiesburg.  The campus is one of Mississippi’s best kept secrets.

What are some cool/fun things you’ve had a chance to experience while at Southern Miss? One of my favorite bands of all time (MuteMath) played at Eaglepalooza.  It was a dream come true....oh, and I went to London this past summer!

Tell us about your time abroad in London. It was the greatest experience up to this point of my life.  I got to see the music business in it’s most exciting state: London!  Between meetings with huge corporations to one on one conversations with songwriters at a pub, I feel like I really experience life as a Londoner.  My last day in London was spent at the iTunes music festival.  The friendships, the city and the culture were beyond explanation.  I will never forget that summer.

Why did you choose to major in the School of Mass Communication and Journalism at Southern Miss? I want my voice to be heard in a huge way. The school of Mass Communication was MADE for that.  It’s in the name, for crying out loud!

When I have free time, I like to... play music.  I’ve played in bands since I was in the 8th grade and haven’t stopped since.  I always play music with my best friends.  It’s what defines me.

I have always wanted to... go to Australia.  I would even consider moving there.  Something about that place pulls at my heart strings.  Perhaps it’s the funny accents?

My favorite hobby is... writing songs.  Even if no one hears them, I feel like my voice is heard.  There is something magical about placing your thoughts, emotions, and passions into some form of literature.

My dream job would be... a film composer.  The first time I saw Jurassic Park, it wasn’t the film that captivated me; it was the music.  A part of me never forgot that moment.  Film composition isn’t done the way it used to be, but I would still love to pursue it in some way.

My favorite quote is... ”We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and learning new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” -Walt Disney

After graduation I plan to... see the world a bit more.  I’ve been out of the country 3 times.  I want to see China and Scotland.  I would love to take the time to live abroad again.

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering Southern Miss... USM is a great place.  Take part in the campus activities and if at all possible, study abroad.  You will appreciate where you came from, where you’ve been, and how far you’ve come.
