Welcome

The Center for Science and Mathematics Education

Nationally Ranked in Top Ten!

Greetings!

Thank you for visiting our website. We invite you to learn more about us and hope that we can help you reach your career and life goals.

USM's Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CSME) enjoys a unique and enviable position. Continuing the heritage of our university (which began as the state's teacher college in 1910) and housed within the College of Science and Technology (CoST), our degrees embed pedagogy within rigorous content. The evolution of the Center from a department further enhances our ability to meet our mission of helping educators learn how to teach mathematics and science disciplines in the most effective ways possible. In addition to granting M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, CSME also coordinates teacher licensure in secondary mathematics and science education.

Our faculty hold tenure in the Departments of Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Polymer Science - indeed, every department within CoST. Our graduates include teachers with National Board Certification, and community college and university faculty members around the world. Distinguished alumni include Wolff-Michael Roth, Lansdowne Professor at the University of Victoria, and Kamel Dallal, who is with the Ministry of Education in Lebanon.

We want all of our graduates to be exemplary educators who have both broad and deep content knowledge; who know how to conduct educational research in their own fields of expertise; and who know how to teach and assess student learning using research-based curricula and innovative instructional technologies - in other words, who constantly strive to do their best to teach the world's next generation. Catering to teachers, we offer summer courses and night classes and accommodating residency requirements. If you are interested, we want to hear from you!

We invite our alumni to call or write to us. Please let us know how you are doing, what we can do to improve, and what we can do to help you. We would also like for you to follow us on Facebook to post messages so we can recognize your work. Hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
Sherry S. Herron
