About the College


    • FACTS & RANKINGS

      The College of Science and Technology consists of 13 degree granting schools and departments and offers programs at the university's campuses and teaching sites in Hattiesburg (main campus), Ocean Springs (Gulf Coast Research Laboratory), Biloxi (Keesler AFB), Long Beach (Gulf Park Campus), Gulfport (Student Services Center), and Stennis Space Center.

      The second largest college in the Southern Miss system, the College of Science and Technology had an enrollment of 2,593 undergraduates and 577 graduate students in fall of 2009, served by 193 full-time faculty members.

      In fiscal year 2010, the annual budget of the college was more than $60 million and the college received more than $46 million in grants and contracts.

      • AGEM
        The Alliance or Graduate Education in Mississippi (AGEM) is a comprehinsive program designed for minority students to enhance entry into and successful completion of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics graduate programs. The AGEM consortium is comprised of the state's four Ph.D granting institutions: University of Mississippi, Jackson State University, Mississippi State University, and the University of Southern Mississippi, in partnership with several state and regional historically black colleges and other smaller colleges.

    • PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT
      The Proposal Development Office of the College of Science and Technology at the University of Southern Mississippi was created to help meet the long-term institutional research and educational priorities of the universtiy, e.g., promoting multidisciplinary research teams, enhancing new and junior faculty research, increasing opportunities for undergraduate research, and helping to meet diversity objectives for science and technology education.

      The staff of the Office of the First Year Experience knows that the transiton to Southern Miss, whether from high school or a community college, can be filled with challenges requiring adjustment to a new environment and is committed to helping students navigate their first year as they make Southern Miss their home.
    • PREPROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS
      The Preprofessional Office helps students prepare for careers in a variety of health-care fields, including medicine, denistry, and pharmacy, by sharing strategie for success and offering assistance with course selection, schedule planning and the application process.
    • RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
      There are a number of options for undergraduate students in the College of Science and Technology to pursue meaningful research opportunities while they are enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi. Some students volunteer in the labs of a faculty member or they serve as support personnel and are paid as work study students. Others earn academic credit for one or more semesters of involvement in an ongoing research project. Some students do research because they plan to graduate with Latin honors, either as a member of the Honors College, which requires a senior honors project, or by pursuing alternate Latin honors.
