Q. How do I find a part-time job?

Student Employment assists Southern Miss students with finding part-time jobs in the Hattiesburg area. Many jobs have a strict schedule, but some employers are flexible and can accommodate your class schedule.

Q. How do I get started?
A.
All positions are posted on Eagle Employment, our online career center. Log in or create an account now.

Q. What type of jobs are listed with your office?
A. A wide variety of opportunities are posted with our office such as sales, office assistance, computer programming and service, delivery, warehouse, food service, retail, child care, and tutoring.

Q. What are odd jobs?
A. These jobs are short-term and usually only require a few hours to complete. To receive Odd Job e-mail alerts, select "Odd Jobs" in the Job Preference field in your Eagle Employment profile.

Q. What type of jobs pay the most?
A. The more skilled the job, the better the pay. Jobs involving computer, bookkeeping, or technical skills usually begin at $6.00 per hour or more. Tutors in their freshman, sophomore, or junior years earn $10 per hour; senior- or graduate-level tutors receive $15 per hour.

Most labor jobs also pay considerably above minimum wage, $6.50 per hour and up.

Q. Do I have to pay taxes on my earnings?
A. Your tax status is determined by your W-4 and state tax forms.

Q. Do I have to work during university breaks?
A. Off-campus jobs are more likely to require you to work during the university breaks but some employers can offer a more flexible work schedule. Specific work schedules and requirements are included in each position description.
