Assistantships

There are a limited number of assistantships available for graduate students in speech-language pathology and audiology. Usually about 20-25 percent of our graduate students hold assistantships.

In return for a small stipend [about $3,200 for nine months] and tuition remission [including out-of-state fees], graduate assistants are required to provide 14-16 hours of service to the department per week. Service may include assisting professors in doing research, helping faculty teach classes, and grading tests and assignments.

Graduate assistants are required to register for 12 academic hours each semester in order to maintain in-state and out-of-state waivers.

A request for an assistantship is part of the application for admission to the graduate program. Graduate assistantships are available only to speech-language pathology and audiology applicants who are accepted on regular admission status. Contact the department chair for additional information.

Traineeships

Student traineeships are offered by a limited number of off-campus practicum sites. Only students who are enrolled in supervised practicum at approved sites are eligible for traineeships. Arrangements for traineeships must be completed and approved by the off-campus placement adviser prior to beginning the off-campus experience. Any financial compensation must be based on the traineeship model [students in training may not serve as salaried professionals].
