Dr. Brett Kemker has been selected as assistant provost for The University of Southern Mississippi.

Kemker recently served as the chair for the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences and associate dean for academic and student affairs with the College of Health.

"My role in the provost's office will be facilitating university support for our students and their successful graduation," Kemker said. "Students become active members of an academic community here at The University of Southern Mississippi. They are intimately involved with faculty in the creation and dissemination of knowledge."

Kemker's responsibilities as associate dean included student advising coordination, student appeals, review and approval of curricula exceptions, student practice development, oversight of programs assessments and coordination of the relationship with Gulf Coast student affairs issues. He first joined Southern Miss as an audiology faculty member in 2006.

"Dr. Kemker is highly qualified in the areas of student retention and enrollment," said Provost Dr. Robert Lyman. "He has the vision, capability and experience to help us improve in these vital areas."

The decision to appoint an assistant provost internally was also based on the current financial climate, Lyman said.

"Because of financial restraints, we did not feel that we had to create a new position; but instead divert Dr. Kemker's current administrative responsibilities to utilize him for this role," Lyman said.
