COMMUNICATION

All Southern Miss students are given an email account that ends with @usm.edu. You will contact the iTech help desk to obtain your account name and password. You will use this email address for ALL communications with Southern Miss faculty and the SLIS office. These email addresses have been established to enable faculty to send email to their registered class members, and to students without having to keep a special listing of email addresses. All SLIS students must be subscribed to the listserver lisnews@usm.edu, and must be enrolled in coursesites.blackboard.com SouthernMiss@TheLibrarySchool, both are mechanisms used by the school to inform students of dates of interest, and important notices. Students who fail to be subscribed will not be excused for failure to comply with instructions supplied via these methods.

COMPUTING ACCOUNTS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

You will need a Southern Miss computer account to allow you access to e-mail and other university resources. A computer account will be issued to you at no charge by Information Technology (iTech), located on the first floor of the student Hub. Once your university account is established, please provide your e-mail address to the school secretary. Many of you will also have accounts from other ISPs or service providers. Please provide e-mail addresses for all accounts you use regularly, and a current physical address and phone numbers, so we can reach you promptly if necessary.

NATIONAL AND REGIONAL AFFILIATIONS

If you live in Mississippi, we urge you to join the Mississippi Library Association, www.misslib.org. We recommend that graduate students affiliate with their state or regional library association and join the American Library Association (ALA) www.ala.org. Some of these organizations also provide reduced rates for student membership. If you have a special interest area you should join the professional organization or round table that is appropriate; you should also check for list server and discussion boards.

Southern Miss @ the Library School is a Blackboard Coursesite used to create a sense of community among our LIS students, faculty, staff and Alumni; and to provide important information to the SLIS community. This coursesite allows distance students to communicate with classmates, faculty, and potential employers in an on-line campus environment and stay abreast of current events.

Information found on the Coursesite:

  • Access Codes

  • Textbooks Sales

Listservs

Lisnews: SLIS Student Electronic Mailing List
All SLIS students (graduate and undergraduate) should subscribe to the SLIS student electronic mailing list, lisnews. Information is distributed to the mailing list from the SLIS office from faculty and staff to all subscribers. Messages include deadline date reminders, LISSA meeting notifications, messages from faculty regarding courses, and university announcements. Lisnews is the only means we have to communicate if Blackboard Coursesites goes down.

Instructions for subscribing:

Other noteworthy information:
  • If you would like to post to lisnews, send the message to lisnews@usm.edu. Remember that this message will be sent to all those on the listserv!
  • When you receive a message from lisnews and desire to reply to the person sending the message, do NOT click the reply option, but instead compose a new e-mail message to be sent to that person's individual e-mail address.
  • Students are asked not to use this listserv to send personal messages.
  • If you would like to remove yourself from this mailing list, fill out the form for unsubscribing (located under "Lisnews Subscribers") at https://mail.usm.edu/mailman/listinfo/slisjobs.
  • If you would like to contact the owner of the list, if you have trouble unsubscribing, or if you have questions about the list itself, send e-mail to slis@usm.edu
Slisjobs: SLIS Student Electronic Mailing List
This listserv is used to distribute postings of available positions in the field of library and information science. Instructions for subscribing

LISSA: Library and Information Science Student Association
LISSA is an official student chapter of the American Library Association (ALA). Each undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the School of Library and Information Science is automatically a LISSA member. LISSA is active in several areas, including volunteer support of the Fay B Kaigler Children's Book Festival, hosting speakers on professional development, and providing activities for social interaction between both students and faculty. Get involved in LISSA today!

SouthernMiss@TheLibrarySchool's LISSA forum is a means for students, both local and remote, to communicate and to provide input about their desires for the LIS student association. Contact Dr. Teresa Welsh or Dr. Catharine Bomhold, the faculty advisers for LISSA, for more information.

LISSA Meetings
LISSA meets at least once a month at a time convenient to the officers. For SLIS students who may live at a distance to campus, SouthernMiss@TheLibrarySchool is available for virtual chat (LISSA meetings can be attended remotely. Web liaisons attend meetings on campus and communicate topics to remote students and speak on their behalf.) Meetings are open to all students and all are encouraged to attend. If you have questions, contact Dr. Teresa Welsh or Dr. Catharine Bomhold, the LISSA faculty advisers. LISSA meetings minutes are available on file.

How You Can Participate

  • Volunteer to be a LISSA remote site representative.
  • Tell us what you would like to see the organization accomplish.
  • Come to the meetings (in person or online.) Voice your opinion.
  • The more the merrier!

SLIS Alumni and Beta Phi Mu
SLIS Alumni Association
The SLIS Alumni Association consists of graduates, in and out of libraries, who support the education and professional mission of the school. While much informal networking takes place at conventions, such as that of the Mississippi Library Association, more formal events, including the Alumni Banquet, have become a tradition.

The University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association
The University of Southern Mississippi has a very active and visible alumni association. The SMAA maintains links between Southern Miss and its graduates and friends by facilitating communication, sponsoring events, networking alumni employers and new university graduates, and supporting the university's mission of outreach and education.

Beta Phi Mu
SLIS is the home of the Beta Psi Chapter of Beta Phi Mu, the international honor society for library and information science. Founded in 1945 by the Alpha Chapter at the University of Illinois, it has become the standard alumni organization promoting scholarship, leadership, and service in the information professions. The local chapter sponsors an annual Call For Papers with a monetary award.
