- We use permission lists, so you may not enroll in a course unless your name is on the
permission list. However, because of the list, the course may display as 'closed' -
this only means that all the seats are filled with permissions. If you were given
permission, you should be able to enroll even if the section indicates 'closed'.
- The virtual classroom chat schedule is posted in SouthernMiss@TheLibrarySchool in the
coursesites.blackboard.com courseware, check under the Information button from the
main menu.
- Students should make sure that they are enrolled in the SouthernMiss@TheLibrarySchool
coursesite, and that they check the site weekly. Important semester dates are posted in the
site, as are a variety of other resources.
- SLIS goes online! SLIS offers the 21-credit hour Mississippi
Supplemental Endorsement for
School Library Media Specialists and the master's degree
completely online. SLIS offers many courses completely online!

- Retired elementary teacher donates $1.1 million to
the Children's Book Festival. Fay Kaigler, a long-time supporter of
the festival and the university, taught in the public schools of California
and Mississippi for 33 years. She first attended the festival at the
invitation of her friend Ruth Lamont, a children's librarian from
Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1998 they established the Kaigler-Lamont
Award through the Children's Book Festival to recognize teachers and
librarians for distinguished accomplishments in promoting children's
reading. More recently, Fay Kaigler, has made a major gift that will
ensure a bright future for the Festival. Read more about the

festival.

- E.J. Josey Scholarship Award
now open to African American MLIS graduate students. Prize is $2,000 for best essay. Topic
involves bridging the digital divide in your library service area.
Deadline is May 1 of each year.
