Welcome
|
It is my pleasure
to welcome you to the School of Library and Information Science.
The professional fields represented by our discipline are vibrant
and have a bright future. The faculty and staff of the School
exist here because of you and it is our mission to serve you and
the profession. If you are in Hattiesburg or nearby, please stop
in to introduce yourself to the faculty, staff, and to me. For
those at a distance, please keep in close contact in and out of
class. We have several means of communicating within our community
and want to make SLIS a cohesive educational home for students
and alumni. Best wishes in your studies! We all look forward to
meeting you in person or virtually!
M. J. Norton,
Ph.D., Director
Advising
|
In advance
of registering for the semester, please contact the SLIS office
to be assigned to a faculty advisor. Advisors are assigned based
on several factors: the potential professional match between the
faculty's research/teaching expertise and the interests of the
student, the student's request for a particular advisor, and the
existing advising load of the faculty. Advisors may be changed
at any time by request. Consult advisors about your course of
study at the beginning of your program and each semester before
registering for the following semester. Advisors work with you
as your program concludes so that all requirements will have been
completed by the intended date of graduation. Advisors will have
access to your "Smart Sheet" (undergraduates) or your
"Plan of Study" (graduate students), a copy of which
you should also maintain (the latter are available from the web
site of the Graduate School).
Registration
|
Registration
takes place several times during the year. The University of Southern
Mississippi has adopted the use of an online system for registering:
Southern's Online Academic Registration, (SOAR). For information
about searching SOAR for classes, for the periods (windows) of
time for registering, and for instructions for registering, see
the university's SOAR instruction page.
Communications
|
SLIS uses
several means of communicating among students, staff, faculty,
alumni, and the profession, including an electronic mailing list,
a web site, e-mail, phone and fax. See Contact Us for more details.
