This story submitted by Gene and Wynde Fitts.
Gene and I met in October 1988. We were set up by a sorority sister and his fraternity little brother. They thought we would hit it off and they were right. Since our very first date, we’ve been together, getting married in August 1991.
Gene didn’t propose on campus, but we certainly credit Southern Miss for bringing us together and making us who we are today. Southern Miss gave each of us a gift.
We still get nostalgic about what it was like falling in love here in the 80s. I suppose the most important part of our story is that we’ve stayed in love while Southern Miss remains as a backdrop. So many important moments and great memories have been right here whether cheering the Golden Eagles in the stands, serving the university as employees or having a Valentine’s day lunch in the Commons before it was demolished.
