| Welcome to the Field Education web resource site! Field Education
is an educationally directed program under the supervision
of the School of Social Work faculty which offers students
opportunities to acquire skill in practice, to try out learning
and various roles in the field and to test in a field setting,
theories and principles learned in the classroom. It is
coordinated with professionals who work in actual agency
settings, and covers a particular time frame. Students learn
how to deliver services with the guidance and direction
of a qualified field instructor.
The information on this web site is to assist students and field instructors as they prepare for, engage in and complete the field placement experience. There is also information for those who would like to consider becoming an affiliated site or potential field instructor. There are approximately 150 affiliated social service agencies that serve Field Education by providing diverse placement sites and day-to-day field teaching and supervision by qualified field instructors. These agencies are a critical component of the field curriculum and carry a large share of responsibility for the education of students in the field We express our appreciation to agency executives, social workers who serve as field instructors and the other agency personnel who contribute so vitally to the professional preparation of our students. The relationships the School enjoys with the social service agencies form a partnership that makes possible the very existence of the USM School of Social Work and its long history of professional education in Mississippi. We look forward to the continuation and expansion of these partnerships to prepare students for generalist practice and advanced generalist practice. The field practicum provides the student with the opportunity to apply content from the classroom and field instructor’s teaching to the delivery of social services in a practice situation. The field practicum is one of the most important aspects of social work education. The School of Social Work has contracts with local agencies and affiliations with out of state field placements to provide field experience for our student, and we are always developing new contracts. The Field Manual contains all policies and procedures regarding the field practicum, as well as forms used in field placement. Please read carefully.
