The mission of the Student Oceanographic Society is to foster a positive atmosphere in the Department of Marine Science for graduate students to succeed both academically and professionally.  Through the history of SOS, it has provided the necessary means to facilitate communication between the students and the faculty members.  In these trying times after Hurricane Katrina, the members of SOS have provided on-going assistance to many friends and colleagues, which can speak volumes for these individuals in the years to come.  I hope to see SOS continue to develop into a strong organization, which provides a necessitated outlet for communication, fellowship, and professional advancement.
