Welcome

Professional and collegiate stadiums and arenas have been identified by the Department of Homeland Security as potential targets for terrorist activity. Sports events in the United States offer the potential for mass casualties as well as wide spread media coverage and economic impact. The fear resulting from an event or series of events could cripple a multi billion dollar industry.

The University of Southern Mississippi is pleased to announce the establishment of a “first of its kind” CENTER for Spectator Sports Security Management (SSSM) - a world-wide interdisciplinary Center specifically focused on research, education, and outreach efforts in sport event security.

The Center provides a mechanism for:

     •   building security awareness

     •   improving sport security standards   

     •   enhancing capabilities for planning emergency

         response, evacuation, and recovery operations for  

         terrorist incidents, natural   disasters, and crowd

         management issues.

Issues

A myriad of issues constituting potential and actual threats to the ongoing security and safety of sporting events and venues are addressed including:

•   terrorist activities and attacks

•   weapons of mass destruction

•   explosions

•   crowd control

•   societal and fan violence

•   natural disasters

Role

The role of the center is to provide:

     •   research

     •   development

     •   training

     •   certification

of sport managers and facility personnel conducting sporting events, and outreach programs. 

 
Research

The research will emphasize applications related to:

     •   security management

     •   technology application

     •   educational tools

required to prevent, prepare, respond to, and recover from to incidents at sports events.

Training

Objectives are to:

     •   create and deliver courses in sports event security

          management

     •   create knowledge through research activities  

     •   disseminate knowledge

through academic programs, professional forums, and workshops.

These programs are aimed at:

     •   sports managers

     •   facility personnel

     •   special event organizers

     •   law enforcement and emergency responders

     •   outsourced security staff
