About Us
Center Overview
The University of Southern Mississippi's sports event security management and awareness program
is an outgrowth of a comprehensive, grant initiative funded by the Mississippi Office of Homeland
Security and Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and awarded for the planning and development
of a national Center for Spectator Sports Security Management.
Mission
The mission is to develop a research-based model for security management of a wide variety of sport event venues.
Outcome Assessments
The initial projects resulted in:

planning and development of the Center for Spectator Sports
Security Management

customizing and validating a vulnerability assessment
model for sports venues

performing seven vulnerability assessments at the state-funded
institutions of higher
learning

creating a series of "best practices"
-
developing the "Sports Event Security Aware" Seal of Approval System

developing academic and certification programs
Background
Established in 2006, the Center for Spectator Sports Security Management is an interdisciplinary academic center. The capabilities of the Center are enhanced by it close links with
other Southern Miss academic and research centers as well as with other institutions of higher learning, professional
associations, and corporate partners.
The Center provides a unique, interdisciplinary environment that provides a mechanism for:

improving sport security policies and procedure

enhancing emergency response and evacuation

developing procedures for recovery operations related to terrorist incidents,
natural disasters, and crowd management issues
