Master of Science Degree in Sports Management
with an emphasis in Sport Event Security Management


The University of Southern Mississippi School of Human Performance and Recreation, supported by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security (NCS4), offers a Master of Science in Sport Management with an emphasis in Sport Event Security Management.

The 36-credit hour master's level program is designed to equip current and future sports and special event managers and operation directors with the specialization skills and knowledge needed to meet the management capabilities and challenges of homeland defense and security in a sports environment.

This program is the first of its kind in the United States.

Course Delivery

All classes are available online and in a traditional format.

Internship/Practicum

Students will spend one semester interning in a sport and/or entertainment venue. Responsibilities are negotiated with host sport organization and a written contract agreement is completed.

Sport Event Security Management Course Descriptions

HPR 620 Introduction to Sport Security Management
This course will address the myriad of issues constituting potential and actual threats to the ongoing security and safety of sporting events and venues. These include:

• terrorist activities and attacks
• weapons of mass destruction
• explosions
• crowd control
• societal and fan violence
• natural disasters
• security "Best Practices"
• examination of legislation, operations,
role, and function of United States Department of
Homeland Security
• simulations
• case studies related to catastrophic incidents at
sports events

HPR 626 Threat and Risk Assessment of Sport Venues
An overview of the Homeland Security threat and risk assessment methodology is presented. This course will help sport managers to:

• identify vulnerabilities threats
• mitigate risks
• harden sport facility physical protection systems
• use simulations
• conduct vulnerability assessment of approved sport facility in the local community

HPR 628 Sport Event Emergency Response Planning
This course will build specific capabilities and understanding relative to:

  • effective emergency response to a disaster event (domestic, natural, or terrorist based)
  • an understanding of the roles of all recommenced agencies involved, i.e. emergency management, local fire, police, sheriff, and ambulance services
  • consequence, crisis and recovery management
  • utilizing technological tools for training to enhance command center operations
