USM Strategic Enrollment Planning Council Meeting 4-17-08

The committee met for the second time to review progress and to make final recommendations about Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to be used for strategic enrollment management planning.

In particular, the council focused on a discussion over the significance of the parenthetical supporting comments of the Top-level KPIs versus the “supporting indicators” ensued, and eventually the group decided that all of the parenthetical commentary would be moved to the “supporting indicator” position. Dr. Powell will be further modifying the KPIs based on the comments from this council and the directions from the IHL Strategic Initiative. (N.B. Since that meeting, further discussions with the Action Team and Jim Mager of Noel-Levitz have clarified that those parenthetical measures should be seen as descriptors defining the KPIs).

The group engaged in a lively discussion about various possible indicators that could measure student research.  Also, information about the Composite Financial Index measure (which includes ratios of aspects of institutional financial health) was presented to the group. In particular the council members were shown parts of a PowerPoint from the University of North Carolina (http://www.unc.edu/depts/trustees/06Jan%20CAFR.pdf, especially slides 8-20) that illustrates the four ratio components constituting a CFI. Allyson Easterwood did caution against comparing the soon-to-be-developed CFI for USM to those of other institutions.

SEP Action Committee members provided updates about their progress in gathering research data. (The current status of the research initiatives, as of May 1, is posted on the SEPC website). Most of the SWOT analysis is done, the student satisfaction surveys are being administered during the week of April 14, and Jim is reviewing this information.

A discussion of the communication plan was next; many members have already begun giving informal reports to various constituencies, and formal sessions with such groups as Faculty Senate, Academic Council, Chairs/Directors and etc. will begin soon.  Finally, Dr. Powell provided updates on the status of the planned website, which is in progress. He noted that once established, the website will allow all interested parties to track the progress of the planning process.

The next Strategic Enrollment Planning Council meeting will be June 26 at 1 pm. The SEPC will not meet on May 29 as previously planned.
