About the Office of Community Service Learning
The hub for civic engagement on campus is the Office of Community Service Learning (OCSL). Our mission is to foster a life-long commitment to community service and civic responsibility in all members of the university family - students, faculty, staff and surrounding community members.
OCSL promotes community service and service-learning on The University of Southern Mississippi campus and throughout the Hattiesburg community through partnerships with faculty, students and community agencies. Each year the office documents more than 50,000 hours of community service by Southern Miss students.
The programs developed and promoted within the OCSL provide opportunities that combine learning and serving, build community and culture, strengthen leadership skills and increase awareness of our society's needs. The Division of Student Affairs at Southern Miss has been the state leader in the community service and civic education movement since the founding of the office in 1992, which began as a volunteer resource center run by two graduate assistants. The academic service-learning component was added with the hire of a full-time employee in 1995.
