Office of Minority Student Development

The mission of the Office of Minority Student Development at Southern Miss is to provide leadership, direction and an appreciation for diversity. This mission is accomplished by creating an environment conducive to learning, while encouraging collaboration among the various university units.

The office offers specific leadership training for minority student leaders through annual workshops for all minority student officers of the minority student organizations. In addition, the office seeks out future leaders not yet involved in an organization to participate in leadership services.

The office also serves as adviser to the following minority student groups:

  • Afro-American Student Organization (AASO) - Founded in 1969, AASO is Southern Miss' oldest black student organization.
  • Future Black Law Students Association (FBLSA) - Encourages future law students to pursue careers in the judicial system and do all things necessary and appropriate to accomplish these purposes.
  • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) - The mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.
