Campus support services
Southern Miss has a number of campus offices that can help students who need assistance adjusting to college life. Key service units include the following:
- CARES – Campus Action Referral and Evaluation System
- Counseling Center
- Office of Disability Accommodations
- Student Health Services
- Student Support Services
CARES facilitates the assessment and referral of students having mental health, behavioral or academic issues.
Made up of professionals from student affairs and academic affairs, CARES includes a Critical Incident Response Team to assess and intervene in issues of campus safety, an advisory team to that builds relationships with the campus community, and training and education for campus and parents.
Confidential referrals can be made through a Web-based reporting system, Red Flag.
A supervising psychologist and counselors promotes mental health and coping skills. Counseling is completely confidential and bound by HIPAA, the federal government’s privacy requirements.
Students can receive help if they are experiencing issues related to depression, low self-confidence, anxiety, anger, relationships, sexuality, substance abuse and eating disorders.
The Office of Disability Accommodations assists students who fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Staff can evaluate and help students with the following:
- Accessible facilities and furniture
- Alternate-format books and other accessible course materials
- Assistive technology
- Exam and standardized test modifications
- Housing accommodations
- Interpreters, note-takers and readers
The Office of the First Year Initiative (FYI) is here to help students navigate their first year as they make Southern Miss their home.
We start by helping you register for classes through Preview, which is our orientation process. After you have made your schedule we are here to assist you as you begin your classes and answer any questions that may arise as you find your place at Southern Miss.
Southern Style, a unique group of student leaders based out of our office, is also here to help you in this process. It is our goal to make sure you have an amazing first year at Southern Miss, and we are eager to support you in the beginning of your journey as you help take Southern Miss to the top!
Student Health Services provides medical care for the entire university community. A full-service lab, X-ray facility and pharmacy are on-site.
The health center provides health care in the following areas:
- Minor illnesses and allergies
- Chronic medical conditions
- Preventive care such as women’s health exams, men’s health, cholesterol screening and smoking cessation
- Mental health services
Student Support Services is a federally funded program that provides academic support to students who meet certain requirements.
Services include the following:
- Tutoring and study groups
- Supplemental instruction
- Reading and writing labs
- Peer mentoring and counseling
- Leadership training
- Wellness, cultural and social activities
