My life this week

Well it's flu season, and it seems like everyone is getting sick. I am just now getting over being sick, but I did not have the flu, which was very fortunate.  I'm very glad I'm finally getting better, because I have so much work that I should be doing. Also, Halloween is coming up so I need to be better!

I love Halloween, mostly because I love candy and not because I like scary stuff.  I despise scary movies.  When I see scary movies, I have to close my eyes and cover my ears.  It's weird how October is almost over, which means this semester is getting closer to the end. I'm kind of sad that it went by so fast, but I am so ready for Christmas break.  I love being with my family during the holidays and eating good food!  Also, spring semester will begin, and I'll be able to have a fresh start.  I'll have new classes, new teachers and a completely different schedule.

Speaking of new things, I have never had to speak in front of a bunch of people before, but tonight I will be speaking at a scholarship reception on the Coast about the Honors College at Southern Miss.  I'm a little nervous, but I know it'll be a great learning experience for me.  I hope it goes well!

It Never Gets Old!

HOMECOMING! Yes, it is Homecoming, and it has been hectic. I've had a lot of fun, but I've been extremely busy with trying to get my sorority's float finished.

For homecoming, different organizations are divided into teams. There are several competitions throughout the week, and all of the points are tallied at the end to determine a winner. One of the most strenuous competitions is the float contest.  Each organization decorates a float, which is a square structure covered in chicken wire.  The point is to make a huge picture that corresponds with the theme of homecoming, which is "Black and Gold Never Gets Old."  You make the picture by stuffing tiny pieces of colored tissue paper into the wire, so it definitely takes a while.

Another competition is the fountain sit, where a person from each of the teams sits in the fountain in freezing water for as long as they can. Tonight is the Hop Contest in front of the Hub, and it is going to be a lot of fun. Also, Saturday is the game against Tulane, and my friend Kaitlyn Mount is going to be on the field at halftime representing the sophomores at Southern Miss as our homecoming maid! I hope everyone comes out and cheers on the Homecoming Court!

Black & Gold!

My sorority's Date Party is tomorrow, and I'm soooo excited.  It's going to be a really fun time, and I'll be able to hang out with my chapter.  I've been so busy this week so it has been hard to do anything fun with my friends.  I have all of my work done for the week now, and I'm very relieved. My first long paper of the year is due tomorrow, and I'm pretty satisfied with it.  I just always get nervous when I have never had a professor before, because I don't know how they grade.  However, I did go visit with this professor yesterday during his office hours, and he was extremely helpful.  It is always beneficial to go to your professor's office hours, because it shows that you truly do care about the class and your grade.  Professors love when you show that you are putting forth effort in the class, and they keep that in mind throughout the year.

Also, this Saturday is Black and Gold Day! If you'd like to come and get a look at the campus and you happen to be reading this blog, then I encourage you to come out! I am part of Eagle Connection, which is a recruitment team, and we will be extremely busy that day.  I'm really excited though, because I love meeting new students and telling them about our campus.  I'll be at a tour spot for the triad, so look out for me. I'll be there ALL day! Hopefully, it won't be too cold! It is also our Black Out game that night against Memphis.  Everyone should come out and show support for Southern Miss by wearing all black!  It's going to be a fun game, and I'm pretty excited.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Yay for Fall Break!

FALL BREAK! YAY! I'm so happy that Fall Break is this Thursday and Friday. I need a break before my tests and papers that are coming up this month. I have a fun, long weekend planned, and I'm very excited! Also, Homecoming is approaching! Homecoming week is going to be so busy, but still very fun.  The game is on October 24th, and we are playing Tulane. There is a parade that day at 11 am that I will be in with some of my friends, and I hear it is a lot of fun. There will be a ton going on during the week, so it should be exciting.  Speaking of Homecoming, elections for Homecoming Court were last week. It was so hectic and dramatic, but it is finally over. Congratulations to the elected Homecoming Court!

Also, Southern Style applications have gone out and are due in about a month. Southern Style is a group of selected students who lead orientations for incoming students. Students can try out during their sophomore or junior year. It's an honor to be selected for this group, and I'm pretty nervous about the selection process. I'm going to do my best and just stay positive. I'd really like to be a part of this group, because I love talking to prospective students and helping them transition from either high school or a community college to Southern Miss. It's intimidating talking to incoming students sometimes, but it I think it can be really rewarding.  Have a great weekend!

No more rain!

Well this week has been a good one. The weather has been awesome, and I haven't had much schoolwork.  I'm also a little disappointed there hasn't been any rain because I just got rain boots, a rain jacket, and an umbrella.  I lacked all of those things during the multiple monsoons, so needless to say, I was pretty miserable. Also, I am going home tomorrow to see my family, and I can't wait! On not such a happy note, I was disappointed we lost to Kansas this weekend, but I thought we held our own, especially against a ranked team. So keep it up Eagles!

Anyways...this Sunday was very exciting. I had a meeting for Delta Gamma, but everyone in my pledge class was surprised when we found out that we were each getting our Big Sis.  A Big Sis is someone that should act as your mentor and close friend throughout your college experience. They are someone you can talk to about family problems, as well as school problems. I was especially excited when I found out who my Big Sis was because I already consider her one of my mentors. We received all of our Delta Gamma gear, and then went to get ice cream.

I've

I really have enjoyed being a part of a sorority so far.  My freshman year I did not do one because I didn't think I was a "sorority girl," but I found out that a lot of girls here do not fit that stereotype.  So I decided to give it a try this year, and I'm very glad I did.  We had our first swap last week, which was a lot of fun and allowed me to get to know my chapter outside of a meeting setting, and our first date party is coming up soon!
