Light at the end of the tunnel...

The semester is drawing to a close, and it doesn't feel like it should be yet!  It's been about 70 or 80 degrees every day (up until today).  This time last year it was colder much earlier in the semester.  I'm really excited for the Thanksgiving break, though.  Although I do love school, I also love to sleep all day every now and then, and that's exactly what I plan to do during my break.

BUT, before that can happen, I have my final interview for Southern Style.  Southern Style (if I haven't told you before) is a team of students who help freshmen and transfers get oriented on campus.  You may know them as "orientation leaders," but "Southern Style" is more...well, stylish.  The team members live on campus during the summer and not only get to know each other better, but get to know new students and make them feel at home at Southern Miss.

In addition to that extracurricular tidbit, I have a few papers for my Political Science class that I need to finish up.  The class is called "Great Issues of Politics," and some of the things we have been discussing are health care (of course), the death penalty and homeland security.  Although these are important issues which directly affect the masses, I'm not quite an expert in any of these fields...yet.

Hola

Yesterday evening I went to Mobile, Alabama with some of our Eagle Connection members to speak to high school students at a scholarship reception.  I met a lot of interested parents and prospective students.  While listening to the recruiters speak about scholarships, I was reminded that I can apply for more departmental scholarships as an upperclassman in college.

Today, in my Spanish class, some professors came to talk to us about going to Spain next year. Even though I want to go, I've decided that I'm going to wait and apply for the Luckyday scholarship next year. I'm going to audition for Southern Style this year instead. Southern Style is Southern Miss's version of orientation leaders. They are the hosts for all previews and orientation events.

There are plenty of exciting things coming up!  And yes, I realize I still owe you guys pictures from events! When something interesting arises, I'll be sure to capture the moment.

"That" Time of Year

Well, it's holiday season yet again, and I seem to be the only one standing somewhat still in the hustly-bustlyness of campus and the city.  People love their holidays in the Hub City.  There was a "Thriller" dance-off the other night for pete's sake.  There have been costume parties at local restaurants for the past 3 weeks.  Teachers are giving extra credit to students who show up to class in costume.  I guess I'm just a Scroogey-Grinch type person, but that's okay!  I'm still really nice to people who are extremely consumed in their holiday fun.

I'll at least go to a Halloween party or two this weekend (after doing my homework, of course).

Homecoming 2009

Well, it's Wednesday again, which means it's time for your weekly update on my student life!

It's Homecoming week here at Southern Miss, and the campus is all a buzz with student competitions and activities.  Float-stuffing has been going on all week.  Teams come up with designs that reflect their school spirit and our homecoming theme.  Yesterday was the "fountain-sit".  Students sit in the fountain and answer questions about the university and do random physical activities.  The person who stays in the longest--yep you guessed it--that person wins.

There's also a(nother) dance competition this week.  If you can recall, I blogged about a dance competition earlier this semester.  I'll be dancing in this Homecoming competition, though.  It's been a while since anyone's seen my moves, so they're high in demand.

Maybe you'll get lucky, and I'll post a picture or two of me in action next time!

Change

I'm extremely excited about the fact that I've changed one of my majors.  I'm no longer majoring in Political Science and Philosophy.  It's English and Philosophy all the way now!  Not to say that the Political Science program isn't great at Southern Miss, but I'll be honest and tell you that it's not for me.  Plus, I'm planning on going to Law School, and, in my opinion, majors other than Political Science stand out more on applications (or so I've heard).  I enjoy writing and thinking a lot, so English and Philosophy are a perfect fit.  If I'm going to spend time studying things, I might as well enjoy them.
