Language Academic Credit Abroad Program

The Program

The LACA Program is designed to allow students, who would prefer to study independently of a group, to do exactly that. Study languages in Costa Rica, France, or Spain.

Language institutions currently approved by Southern Miss for language academic credit abroad are listed below under Language Institutions.

Eligibility & Requirements

  1. Applicant must be enrolled in a college/university or have been accepted by a college/university.
  2. Academic requirement - applicant must have a 2.0 GPA and be in good academic standing at your home institution.
  3. Applicant must apply at least one month prior to beginning date of program.

How to apply for credit

Before the program begins
  1. Register and apply online for academic credit via Horizons.

  2. Have official transcript sent directly to the Office of International Programs, see address below.
  3. Pay your program deposit, $250 [you may call 601.266.4344 to pay or the address below].
  4. Select the number of credit hours, see application.
  5. Make final payment to International Programs for the number of credits sought, prior to departure.
  6. School Abroad: First, contact and apply to language school abroad. Second, inform them you are going for academic credit through Southern Miss. Third, make payment to the language school abroad.
During the program
  1. Upon arrival at the school in the host country, you must inform the administration of your need to take an exam/exams in order to receive university credit. The results must be sent to Southern Miss at the completion of your program.
  2. Attend all classes (attendance is obligatory).
  3. Take exams.
  4. Remind school abroad to send all your exams/tests/projects/evaluation directly to The Univesity of Southern Mississippi's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, see address below.
After completion of the program
  1. Complete online evaluation form which will be emailed to you.
  2. Transcripts will be forwarded to the address given on your online application at the end of the semester in which your grade was posted.
  3. Official transcript(s) will not be sent until you have paid the program fees in full.

What applicants may expect from Southern Miss

Before the program begins
  1. Southern Miss professor informs candidate at what level he/she has been placed as per official transcript received.
  2. Student receives letter informing status of his/her acceptance into the LACA program.
  3. Student is registered at Southern Miss in specific course(s).
During the program
  1. Southern Miss professor will be in contact with school to check student's progress.
  2. Southern Miss professor will request, from the school, the exams and evaluations be sent directly to the university for the purpose of assigning grades.
After completion of the program
  1. Southern Miss professor will assess exams and other evaluations, will assign grades, and send grades to the Registrar's Office.
  2. The Office of International Programs will request the Registrar's Office send an official transcript to the address provided by student on the online application.
