Study Abroad Scholarships

The Office of International Programs in the Center for International Education is pleased to offer a range of scholarships to students with demonstrated financial need and a genuine interest in expanding their horizons. Among these scholarships are the CIE Need-Based Scholarships, and the Abbey and Granada Program scholarships.

HOW TO APPLY

Submit the CIE Scholarship Application Form and request one letter of recommendation to be emailed to studyabroad@usm.edu with the subject line: Scholarship recommendation letter: [your name]. Completed applications and recommendation letter are due by:

  • April 1 for fall and summer programs
  • October 15 for spring programs

SELECTION

Awards will be based upon demonstrated financial need, the information you provide in your online application your application essay and your recommendation letter. If you are eligible for multiple awards you may apply for them. Only one letter of recommendation is required per student, even if applying for multiple awards.

NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS

Need-based awards: you will be notified within one week after the program application deadline. The maximum amount that will be awarded via-need based aid is $1,000.

Jennie C. and N.J. Golding, Jr. Scholarship, eligible to The Abbey Program participants only: you will be considered after the application deadline. This scholarship awards up to $500.

The Nation’s Scholarship, eligible to The Abbey and Granada Programs only: you will be considered after the application deadline. This scholarship awards up to $500.

REQUIREMENTS UPON RETURN

Upon return, all scholarship recipients agree to submit a one-page testimonial reflecting on their program abroad, and minimum five photos summarizing the highlights of their experience.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for participation on a study abroad program
  • Applicants must submit a completed application packet by the listed application deadlines
  • Applicants must be willing to share their experience on campus and/or to their community upon return.
