ELIGIBILITY

Candidates who seek a computer applications endorsement must hold a Class A, or higher, teaching certificate in the state of Mississippi.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must complete 12 semester hours from the following three categories as indicated:

Category A: Computer Literacy (3 hrs)

Candidates must take one course/option of the following:

  • IT 365 Computer Applications in Education. 3 hrs. Skill development in the use of computer technology appropriate to teaching, learning, and managing education.
  • CSS 400/500 Introduction to Computer Education. 3 hrs.  Designed as a first course for educators who plan to teach about and/or use computers.  Problem solving, programming, current topics and administrative uses.  Cannot count toward a degree in Computer Science.
  • BTLE (Basic Technology Literacy Exam).  Exam designed to ensure that teachers are prepared to use the tools of technology to help students learn.  Test modules are in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, & Telecommunications.  Can only be used by USM graduates holding 105 licensure.

Category B : Microcomputer Applications (6 hrs)

Candidates must present two courses from the following titles - however a computer language course may substitute for one applications course:

  • BTE 361 Computer Applications in Business I. 3hrs.  This course offers instruction and practice using the microcomputer as a tool to solve problems in business and education. Word processing, spreadsheet, and Internet application software is used in the environment of the Windows operating system. 

  • BTE 363 Computer Applications in Business II. 3hrs. This course offers instruction and practice using the microcomputer as a tool to solve problems in business and education. Multi-media presentation software, database software, and Internet software is used in the environment of the Windows operating system. 

  • BTE 410/510 Production and Integration Processes for Bus Ed. 3 hrs.  Advanced production and editing of documents with emphasis on speed and accuracy; completion of integrated projects using industry-current software.

  • BTE 465/565 Microcomputer Applications In Business Education. 3hrs. Skill development in the use of microcomputers and multiple software packages appropriate to teaching and managing technology education.

  • IT 467/567 Desktop Publishing. 3hrs. Office based microcomputer production of typeface/graphics enhanced media, designed to be both pleasing in appearance and effective in communications.

Category C : Interactive Instructional Design (3 hrs)

Candidates must present one course from the following two available:

  • IT 469/569 Multimedia Design and Development. 3hrs. Prerequisite:  Basic Computer Literacy.  Interactive instructional design and applications. Introduction to hypermedia tools, authoring systems, CAI software reviews/evaluations, and hands-on interactive module production.

  • CSS 403/503 Authoring Systems for Computer Based Learning.  3hrs. Prerequisite: CSS 400/500. Developing computer based instructional modules using the authoring system approach.
