Undergraduate Program in Dance

The dance program at The University of Southern Mississippi prepares students for both professional and scholarly careers in the contemporary arts marketplace.

Past graduates of the Bachelor of Fine Arts dance program are employed as dance teachers at all levels of education, both private and public. As performers, they have gone on to dance professionally in nationally recognized companies, including Shen Wei Dancers, Misnomer Dance Theater, Hellanius Wilkins, Hannah Khan, Chen and Dancers, AfterImages, Doug Varone, Don Redlich, José Limon, and the San Francisco Ballet. Many continue their education in pursuit of a master's degree.

The challenging and intensive four-year dance major program is grounded in a comprehensive curriculum of dance technique (ballet and modern), choreography, and performance.

Degree options include Choreography and Performance and Dance Education. A minor is also available.

Course offerings include: Tap, Jazz, Labanotation, Composition, Modern Dance, Ballet, Improvisation, Dance Appreciation, Rhythmic Analysis Dance in Cultural Context, 20th-Century Dance Forms, Music Analysis and Resources, Production and Choreographic Research Projects.
