Stephen G. Judd is an associate professor of scenic design at The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre and Dance. He has over 250 scenic and lighting designs to his credit in both academic and professional theatre, including the Williamstown Theatre Festival, New Stage (Jackson, MS), Stage South, and the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. His scenic designs in Mississippi include "Art" for New Stage Theatre and the Southern Miss production of "The Rimers of Eldritch", a finalist in the American College Theatre Festival in April 2000.
Mr. Judd was the production manager for the Williamstown Theatre Festival's 1999 and 2000 seasons, including notable productions of "Camino Real" with Ethan Hawke and Blair Brown; "As You Like It" with Gwenyth Paltrow; and "The Price", directed by James Naughton and which subsequently transferred to Broadway. Mr. Judd's work has brought him into contact with Arthur Miller, Lanford Wilson, Joanne Woodward, Nicholas Martin, Joe Montello, John Lee Beatty, and many other playwrights, directors, designers and actors of the American stage. While at Williamstown, Mr. Judd assisted Derek McClaine, Christine Jones, and Hugh Landwehr. In 2004, he did the scenic design for the Southern Miss production of "Medea", directed by guest artist Paul Weidner.
He has taught at numerous institutions, including Converse College, Duke University, Alfred University, and the State University of New York at New Paltz.
Mr. Judd has three years of advanced training in painting and printmaking at the Rochester Institute of Technology College of Art and Design. He has been a recipient of a National Endowment New Forms Grant for his work as an artist.
For the last three years, he has supervised Design Storm in ACTF Region IV, working in 2005 with Ming Cho Lee, who is often called "the Dean of American Design" and in 2006 with costume designer Susan Tsu.
He was selected to be a KATCF Region IV Faculty Fellow for the KATCG 2003 National Festival. Mr. Judd is an ACTF certified Respondent in Region IV and in 2007 will be a design respondent for Region I (New England) ACTF Festival.
