Written in 1953, this dark comedy visits a frightened town plagued by arsonists. A highly theatrical metaphor for Nazism and fascism, this classic postwar drama exposes how normal citizens are taken in by evil, and is as shocking today as in it was when it first appeared as an example of European Expressionism. The Firebugs received an important revival at Britain’s National Theatre in 2007.
Lysistrata by Aristophanes, translated by Kim Herzinger and Angela Ball
Studio Project, Hartwig Theatre
Oct. 26, 27, 31, Nov. 1, 2 at 7:30 pm
Oct. 28* at 2 pm
GENERAL ADMISSION: $8
Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, Lysistrata is a comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian war by withholding sexual favors until the fighting stops. This early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society seems as relevant today as ever and will be produced in an experimental production. We are pleased to produce Lysistrata in a translation by Kim Herzinger and Angela Ball, Professor of poetry in the Southern Miss Department of English.

Nov. 18* and Dec. 2 at 2 pm
RESERVED SEATS: $14 public; $10 faculty, staff, seniors, military; $8 students
Called “the vintage champagne” of the English drama, The School for Scandal is artificial and sparkling, funny and buoyant. Its brilliant wit and its pleasing entertainment are as delightful now as in its first performance in 1777, when it was considered an instant classic of the ‘long eighteenth century’. Scandal mongering today is as ridiculous and vicious as it was then, and the play’s central question still provokes our enthusiasm: Will true love win out?
