David Stellhorn spent the last four years as the assistant technical director at the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., where he worked with internationally known directors and designers. The American Repertory Theatre has been consistently recognized as one of the top three regional theatre companies in the country.
While earning his Master of Fine Arts in technical direction, Stellhorn was awarded the first Fredrick Buerki Scenic Technology award from the United States Institute of Theatre Technicians for his work engineering the motion controlled elevator and turntables for the musical "Once Upon a Mattress" (2000).
As a technical director, he has skills in fine woodworking, rigging and computer-aided drafting (VectorWorks and AutoCAD). He has engineered pneumatic, hydraulic, and motorized scenic control systems. He also has extensive experience in metal fabrication, including MIG, TIG and SMA welding, plasma and oxy-acetylene torch cutting.
Stellhorn has been the master carpenter at the American Players Theatre in Spring Green, WI. He worked for three years as a staff scenic carpenter at California State University, Fresno. He spent the first two summers of his theatre career as a carpenter at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, CA.
