Zach
James Wins International Competition! - Bass trombonist Zach James
won the ITA sponsored George Roberts Bass Trombone Competition held in Aarhus,
Denmark at the International Trombone Festival (June 2009). He was
was selected as one of three finalists in the competition through a
recorded preliminary round. Zach's trip was sponsored by the USM
School of Music. As a competition prize, Zach won a tenor
trombone.

Southern Miss Trombone Association formed! -
In Fall 2010 the Southern Miss Trombone Studio began the process of
becoming an official chapter of the International Trombone Association (ITA)
as well as a recognized student organization.

Southern
Miss Trombone Choir Tours Germany - A group of twelve
trombonists and several friends and family members traveled to
Germany from June 1-9, 2009. During the trip,
the group performed in Frankfurt, Berlin, Leipzig, and Munich. We
also attended a concert by the German Brass in Hamburg and went for
dinner with them afterwards! The
tour was coordinated by Kerstin Lange from Music Contact International.

Futch Performs with Mississippi Symphony -
After winning the Mississippi Symphony's Concerto Competition in 2007,
Grant was awarded a cash prize and a performance on the MSO's Bravo
Series. On February 28, 2009 Grant performed Derek Bourgeois'
Trombone Concerto No.1 at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson. BRAVO!!

Trombone Day 2009 a Success - Trombone Day 2009 included nearly 60
registered participants! Highlights included performances and
masterclasses by guest artists Scott Hartman and Matt Niess, the
premiere of a new arrangement by Matt Niess for the Hub Bones, and a
finale concert with close to 80 trombonists performing. Stay tuned
for info on Trombone Day 2010!

Trombone Choir on CD - The Southern Miss Trombone Choir's recording
of Joseph Lalumia's arrangement of The Twelve Days of Christmas
was selected for inclusion on the School of Music's sampler CD entitled
Holiday Gold. Sponsored by a grant from the Partner's for
the Arts, this CD is a gift to donors to the School of Music.

Dr. Tychinski Performs Faculty Recital and Tour - Dr. Tychinski performed
a faculty recital on October 23, 2009. Selections included
Sonata in F Major by Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, Palmetto Suite by
Eric Ewazen, Suite for Unaccompanied Trombone
by Leslie Bassett, Meditation from Thais by Jules Massanet, and
La Petite Suzanne by Arthur Pryor.
In
addition to a performance at Southern Miss, Dr. Tychinski also has
traveled to present recitals and masterclasses this semester at
Mississippi State University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the
University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, the University of Minnesota, the
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, and St. Norbert College.

Sean Dyke Awarded Assistantship - Alumnus Sean Dyke is currently
serving as a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the
2009-10 academic year. Congratulations Sean and continued good luck!

Jason Booth Accepts Position with United States Navy - Former Graduate Assistant Jason
Booth, who recently completed his MM degree at Southern Miss has taken
a position as trombonist with the United States Navy Band and is
stationed in Virginia Beach, VA.
