  • Harvison Wins Presser Award - Each year, the School of Music faculty selects an outstanding upperclassman to receive the William Presser Scholarship.  This award will be presented to Justin at the School of Music's Fall Convocation on September 4, 2007.  Congratulations Justin!

  • Paden Receives Brantley Scholarship - Bass trombonist Brian Paden was named the recipient of the Tom and Claire Brantley Orchestra Scholarship for 2007-08.  The scholarship, given with the generosity of the Southern Miss alums, is given to an outstanding undergraduate trombonist in the Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra.  Congratulations Brian!
  • Futch Wins Concerto Competition - In March, Grant Futch won the Mississippi Symphony's Young Artist Concerto Competition!  Grant received a cash prize and will perform the Gordon Jacob Trombone Concerto with the MSO in January, 2009 at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson.  Congratulations Grant!
  • Trombone Choir Church Performances - Students from the trombone studio will be performing in several churches in the next few weeks.  Eight members of the trombone choir performed in Seaside, FL on September 9th.  Members of the choir will perform at Ellisville First United Methodist on October 7th.
  • Trombone Day a Success!  The first annual Trombone Day featured artists Colin Williams, Mark Lusk, and Tom and Heather Mensch.  For highlights including audio, video, and pictures, CLICK HERE.  Trombone Day 2008  at the University of Southern Mississippi will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2008.  The day will feature master classes by guest artists, concerts, a retail display area, and rehearsals and a performance with large trombone choirs.  The event is open to all age levels.  Details on the event, guest artists, and registration information will be announced in September.
  • Jazz Trombone Ensembles - This fall two jazz trombone ensembles will exist under the umbrella of the trombone studio.  The signature jazz group is the Hub Bones - a five trombone ensemble made up of players selected by audition.  The new ensemble, the USM Jazz Bones will consist of any interested trombonists.  Both groups utilize rhythm sections appointed by Mr. Larry Panella, director of jazz studies.  The groups will be combined to perform jazz literature for 10-16 parts!  Both groups are directed by Jason Booth, Graduate Assistant in Trombone.
  • Tychinski Receives Award - Dr. Tychinski was named the recipient of the 2007 University of Southern Mississippi Creativity Award for untenured faculty presented by the Office of the President and the Faculty Senate.  In September, he will be presented a plaque at an awards celebration during the fall semester and also received a cash award.

  • MTNA National Solo Competitions - On Friday, November 2nd the MTNA National Collegiate Artist Competition State Level competition will be held at the University of Southern Mississippi.  Winners advance to a regional competition and possibly onto the National Level competition with a cash prize.  Last year, Brian Paden was the state alternate.  Interested students should contact Dr. Tychinski ASAP and visit the MTNA competition website.

  • Fantasy Football Season 2 - The "Southern Miss Boneheads" fantasy football league is in full swing!  With a host of teams in the middle of the pack, the league title is up for grabs.  To the winner?  Have your name engraved on a meaningless plaque for all time!
