Greetings
and on behalf of the trombone students and myself, we hope you find this
site useful and informative. The Trombone Studio at Southern Miss is
comprised of about 20 students majoring in a variety of music degrees at the
undergraduate and graduate levels plus a number of non-majors who study
trombone and perform in our ensembles. We are proud to be a part of
the School of Music
at The University of Southern Mississippi.
An applied studio is not just a collection of individuals who happen to
study with a specific teacher. A studio is an environment, a
collective of colleagues and friends, and a place to nurture each other's
musical talents. Students help each other with recital and jury
preparation, share their musical gifts and difficulties with one another,
play duets, trios, and quartets together for fun, participate in our
excellent ensembles, and engage in social activities as a group such as
playing volleyball, watching sporting events, or having a barbecue. This team
approach is enhanced by the Trombone Studio Advisory Panel, a group of
student representatives who are given the opportunity to be involved in
leading the current
activities and future of trombone at Southern Miss. Members of this
committee are elected by their peers and receive a one-year paid membership
in the International Trombone Association for their service. In conjunction with the
School of Music, we have also created the Trombone Studio Advancement Fund.
Compensation for off-campus performances by the Trombone Choir, as well as
gifts to the studio, are placed into this account to assist with the
purchase of Trombone Choir sheet music, studio needs, and mainly to help offset expenses for guest
artists, allowing us to continue a tradition of excellence.
Our studio is indeed a special environment for learning that
incorporates the latest technology, professional quality instruments, a vast
library of recordings and sheet music, an outstanding Trombone Choir, and
the opportunity to perform alongside world-class guest artists. Plans
have also been designed for a world-class building for the music department
to equal the achievements of the students and faculty, but no definitive
date for construction has yet been set.
Please have a look around and
contact me at any time for information about the trombone studio, our fine
students, the Trombone Choir, or upcoming events. If you are an
alumnus of the trombone studio, we would especially enjoy hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Dr. Bruce
