Paul McKee

Trombonist Paul McKee received the Bachelor of Music in music education from the University of Northern Iowa and the Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Texas at Austin. Since 1984 he has been a member of Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd and continues to tour and record with the band. In addition to making frequent appearances as a guest artist and clinician, Paul was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Jazz Trombone at Florida State University and has also served on the jazz faculty at DePaul University, Northern Illinois University, Youngstown State University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. His compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded worldwide by professional and academic jazz ensembles. Paul’s recording Gallery was released to critical acclaim on the Chicago-based Hallway Records label and features special guests Carl Fontana, Bobby Shew, Tim Ries and Ron Stout. Paul is a clinician for the Conn-Selmer company and plays King trombones exclusively.

Nittany Trombone Quartet

The Nittany Trombone Quartet is comprised of Bruce Tychinski (Assistant Professor of Trombone, University of Southern Mississippi), Sean Reusch (San Diego freelance trombonist) , Jon Moyer (music teacher, Central York School District in Pennsylvania), and Matt Neff (bass trombonist, U.S. Navy Band).  Formed in 1988 when all four were students at Penn State University, the group has performed at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, at the MENC and the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s conventions and in 1988, advanced to the National Finals of the MTNA Collegiate Chamber Music Competition.  In recent years the NTQ has performed concerts and master classes in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Virginia.  The group performs a variety of standard quartet literature as well as arrangements of jazz and orchestral transcriptions, many written especially for the group.

Matt Neff

Musician 1st Class Matt Neff has served as bass trombonist of the United States Navy Band in Washington D.C. since 1992.  Mr. Neff received a B.S. in Music Education from Penn State before beginning his service as a military musician.  He has toured throughout the United States and performed for official functions at the White House for three different Presidents.  Matt also performs with the Navy Band Brass Quintet.  He additionally serves as Adjunct Professor of Trombone at George Mason University and performs frequently as a freelance musician in Washington.  Active as a composer and arranger, Matt frequently writes for the Navy Band Brass Quintet and Nittany Trombone Quartet, and has several compositions published by Lyceum Press.

Sean Reusch

Sean Reusch holds degrees from Penn State University and the Manhattan School of Music and is near completion of the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at UCLA.  As a freelance musician and teacher in San Diego, Sean has enjoyed a varied career.  He has performed with artists such as Michael Crawford, Johnny Mathis, Art Garfunkel, Isaac Hayes, Eddie Daniels, and Marvin Hamlisch, as well as the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, Pacific Symphony, Redlands Symphony, Pasadena Symphony, Westwind Brass, Helix Brass, and the Millenia Consort.  A current and founding member of the Presidio Brass, he has toured and recorded throughout the United States.  Sean also maintains an active private teaching studio and is on faculty at Palomar College, San Diego State University, and Mira Costa College.

Bruce Tychinski

Dr. Bruce Tychinski is Assistant Professor of Trombone at The University of Southern Mississippi, where he teaches applied trombone lessons, courses in trombone pedagogy and literature, and conducts the Southern Miss Trombone Choir.  He is currently a member of the Southern Arts Brass Quintet, Nittany Trombone Quartet, and Principal Trombonist of the Gulf Coast Symphony.  He has also performed with the Louisiana Philharmonic, Mississippi Symphony, Pensacola Symphony, and Mobile Symphony.  In March, he will perform at the Eastern Trombone Workshop.  Prior to coming to Southern Miss, Dr. Tychinski taught at St. Norbert College and the University of Northern Iowa.  He holds degrees from Penn State University and the University of Kansas.

Jon Moyer

Jon Moyer is the Music Department Chairman and Instrumental Music Instructor for Intermediate Schools in Central York School District in York, PA.  Additionally, he serves as Adjunct Professor at York College of Pennsylvania where he teaches applied music and conducts the Spartan Brass Choir.  He is currently a member of the Nittany Trombone Quartet, The Spring Garden Concert and Dance Bands, The York Wind Ensemble and is an active freelance musician.  In 2005, Mr. Moyer was recognized as Pennsylvania’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Shippensburg University School Study Council. Jon received a B.S. in Music Education from Penn State University, a M.S. in Music Education from Towson University and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University.

Compete in a Mock Military Band Audition
  • $100 Prize to Winner!
  • Judging panel will consist of three people and chaired by Matt Neff of the United States Navy Band.
  • Auditions will be screened.  One round only.
  • Contestants will be placed in a random order the day of the event and remain anonymous to the judging panel.
  • All contestants will receive written comments from the judging panel.
  • Excerpts will include the same pieces for tenor or bass trombones with minor differences between the parts.  There will not be separate tenor and bass divisions.
  • Judges reserve the right to select which excerpts they will hear during the audition, which sections of each, and in what order.
  • $25 Entry Fee for all contestants.
  • Minimum four contestants for competition to take place.  In the event of fewer entrants, participants can still take the audition for comments only.  The entry fee will be refunded to you.
  • Due to time constraints, there can be a maximum of 12 contestants.  The first twelve paid entries will be accepted.
  • All contestants must be registered participants of Southern Miss Trombone Day.
