Admissions

International Students:

International students should contact International Student and Scholar Services before applying or sending any documents to the university. ISSS can help you with the admissions process and other issues regarding international study.

Undergraduate Students:

If you are interested in attending Southern Miss you must first apply to the university. Instructions and application procedures can be found at the Admissions Office Web site. You must also complete the Band Application found on the Southern Miss Department of Bands Web site (Prospective Students link). Finally, to be considered for scholarship support you should contact Dr. Kelly to schedule an audition. Scholarship auditions must be completed by March 1 to be considered for scholarship awards for the following fall. Scholarship awards cannot be offered to you unless you have first been accepted to The University of Southern Mississippi, so please apply as soon as possible.

Your audition should include a prepared solo (accompaniment is encouraged but not required) or etudes that demonstrate lyrical and technical playing, scales (as many majors and minors as you can perform from memory) and sight reading. You should prepare 4-6 minutes of music that best showcases your abilities. Afterwards we will have an opportunity to chat about your career aspirations/expectations and I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about the USM School of Music or your degree plan.

Graduate Students:

If you are interested in applying for graduate studies you must apply to The University of Southern Mississippi through the Office of Graduate Studies. You must also send a letter of intent, your curriculum vita and three letters of recommendation to the School of Music following the guidelines outlined by the Office of Graduate Studies.

Finally, to be admitted into the School of Music you must schedule a Candidacy Audition with the brass faculty. A Candidacy Audition is a 30-minute recital that may consist of etudes, solo repertoire, and/or orchestral/band excerpts that display a wide range of styles and abilities. You are expected to program at least one selection on piccolo, D, or E-flat trumpet. Accompaniment is encouraged but not required for this audition.

Students for whom a live audition is impractical may be accepted on a "conditional basis" by submitting directly to the professor your performing resume or curriculum vita and an unedited recording (CD is acceptable, video or DVD is preferred) made within the past six months. If accepted as a conditional student you must perform a Candidacy Audition for the brass faculty during the first semester of study to be accepted into the graduate program. Accompaniment IS REQUIRED for this audition.
