The Southerner is the official yearbook for The University of Southern Mississippi. The Southerner yearbook is compiled and created by a staff comprised of undergraduate students. Students are responsible for all photography, reporting, design and layout of the book. The staff begins work on the book each fall and yearbooks are distributed to the university community each May. Students are paid for their work on staff and working for The Southerner is great, hands-on experience for any student pursuing a degree in Graphic Design, Art, Photojournalism, Journalism or English. Any student (regardless of their major) is invited to apply for a position on the Southerner Staff serving in one of the following areas:

Reporters: conduct interviews (both in person and electronically) and write stories containing quotes and pertinent information about the subject being covered. Paid by stories written.

Photographers: document an event through artistic and professional way. Paid per photo used.

Designers: create spreads in the book using the material provided by reporters and photographers. Experience in Adobe InDesign CS4 or CS5 is preferred. Paid per spread designed.
All positions are open to all majors.
