Overview

The Office of University Communications provides essential communication services to the university and assists all university units (offices, colleges/departments, Student Affairs and university affiliates) with individual communication needs.

The mission of the Office of University Communications is to lead Southern Miss’ charge to the top in positioning the institution as a breakthrough university driven beyond convention to explore, inspire and refine the intellectual frontier. The office’s creative and hard-working staff members conceptualize, develop and communicate key messages with audiences on the university’s campuses and teaching sites and beyond.

With the institution’s image always in mind, University Communications manages and protects the Southern Miss brand through communicating and ensuring adherence to graphic standards and writing style guides.

The office provides the tools through which the university’s values, mission, accomplishments and more are shared with the world—tools which span both print and electronic media. While the office’s primary areas of expertise are listed below, some additional communication tools are available to the university community, including USM Mailout, the university’s primary email communication vehicle; electronic message boards; on-hold phone messaging and more.

While staff members at the Office of University Communications on the Hattiesburg campus are always willing to assist the entire Southern Miss community with university messages, the Office of University Communications at Southern Miss Gulf Park is also available to assist with messages specifically related to the university’s campus in Long Beach.

The office invites you to pass along your good news related to Southern Miss at 601.266.4491 or universitycommunications@usm.edu.
