The 2009 Fall Convocation ceremony was held Wednesday, September 30 in Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.
Southern Miss and Mississippi State announced jointly Thursday, September 24 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson that they
will play a two-game, home-and-home football series beginning in 2014.
Dr. Shahid Karim, assistant professor of biology at The University
of Southern Mississippi, recently received a $307,996 grant from the
American Heart Association (AHA) to research the effect genes have on a
tick's ability to carry dangerous pathogens like agents of Lyme
disease.
The grant, titled "Targeting Lyme Disease Vector," funds four years of research to understand the interaction of tick-pathogens and examining new ways to interrupt the life cycle of tick-borne pathogens and new strategies to fight these diseases.

Diligent efforts to enhance the graduate program within the University
of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing have paid off with a $746,006
grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services -
Health Resources and Services Administration.
Titled, "Preparation of Mississippi Nurses for 21st Century Health Care," the three-year grant will support the development of a high quality, evidence-based, culturally appropriate graduate nursing curriculum delivered by distance learning technology that is reflective of changing population dynamics, yet flexible and portable to meet the needs of working nurse professionals.

The University of Southern Mississippi's "Survivor: Biology Adventures"
summer enrichment camps for students in grades 4-6 and 7-12 include interactive indoor and outdoor lab-based
activities for students with a keen interest in biology, with
additional focus on collaboration and producing leaders successful at
achieving a common goal.
Participants learn what it takes to become a scientist by studying the ecology of south Mississippi, collecting and processing water samples and bacterial counts of food and soil and locating and identifying plankton from Lake Byron on the Southern Miss campus. They also engage in a ropes course and ecology activities, canoe Black Creek and learn survival skills.
