Founders' Day ceremonies, celebrating the 99th anniversary of the University of Southern Mississippi, were held Monday, March 30 on the north lawn of the Lucas Administration Building in Hattiesburg.

Eco Eagle Lecture Series - James Polk

Sustainable community development was the topic of the lecture titled "The Greening of Southern Miss" by local architect and planner James Polk.

Polk is known for promoting livable communities designed on the "village" model and his innovative design work. In the lecture, Polk addresses green design on the Southern Miss campus and opportunities for developing a sustainable relationship with the surrounding community.

President Martha Saunders and Vice President for Advancement Dr. David Wolf announced Tuesday, March 10 that The University of Southern Mississippi has received a $6 million gift that will be used for student scholarships and strategic initiatives.

Aspire Benefit Concert

Local musicians, dance companies and actors performed on March 6, 2009 to raise proceeds for the Family Network Partnership during the sixth annual Aspire Benefit Concert.

The Family Network Partnership is a nonprofit program founded by The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Social Work to provide low income children with after-school activities.

Performers included Matthew Funches; Melissa Beauvais; Meistersingers director Paul Lee; the Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera; Pine Belt Youth Ballet; William Carey University Jazz Assemble; the Hattiesburg Community Steel Drum Band; the Southern Miss Department of Theatre and Dance; and Hattiesburg High School's Blair Dance Company.
