Dr. Carley Causey is a native of Mississippi and has about 18 years of teaching experience that has included teaching art in the public, private and public alternative K-12 school settings as well as on the college and university levels. Outside the classroom, she has taught children’s drawing and watercolor and was a children’s art teacher for YMCA summer day camps. She has also taught adult watercolor classes through adult continuing education.
Dr. Causey earned her Ph.D. in Art Education from The Florida State University. Her doctoral studies centered around cognitive psychology and art therapy. Her research interests deal with the cognitive and emotional processes that transpire when one creates a work of art when created for the purpose of self-expression. Because of the unique nature of creating a work of art, Dr. Causey’s research has more recently lead her toward Neuroanatomy and the how neuroscience may inform these processes in creating a work of art. Dr. Causey’s vision is for her psychological and neuroscientific research to aid teaching and learning theory in art education and art therapy much as modern psychology has informed teaching and learning theory in education.
Dr. Causey is a member of the American Psychological Association, The Society for the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts (APA, Division 10), the American Art Therapy Association, the Florida Art Therapy Association, the American Society for Aesthetics, the National Art Education Association, and the Mississippi Art Education Association.
