Susan Fitzsimmons is from St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to coming here, she worked as an administrator for more than six years at the University of Missouri/St. Louis, where she taught in the Honors College and art department. She lived in New York for more than 20 years. Besides working as an artist, she was the associate for Graduate Studies at Empire State College/State University of New York, assistant director of Graduate Studies and arts mentor for more than 12 years.
She has an extensive exhibition record that includes several one-person shows at the Just Above Midtown Gallery and St. Peter’s Church in New York City, and more than 80 group shows at Hofstra University, Albright Knox Museum, State University of New York at Plattsburg, Munson-Williams-Proctor, Albany Institute of History and Art Institute, Saratoga Springs Historical Museum, Schenectady Museum, Meramec Community College, 3rd Floor Gallery, St. Louis, Missouri, Craft Alliance, and the University of Missouri/St. Louis, Gallery Visio.
Her work has been supported by grants from the New York State Council of the Arts, The Guggenheim Foundation Learning to Read through the Arts, EXXON Corporation, C.A.S.T.: Collaborations in Science and Technology from Syracuse University and NYSCA, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Henry Street Settlement House Foundation. Her current work focuses on performance, combining words and images. She is interested in the biological sources of creativity.
