Chair’s message
When Southern Miss opened its doors in 1910, the subject of art was among the first course offerings taught at the new institution. Today the Department of Art and Design exemplifies the university’s contemporary mission in unifying the arts, humanities and technology.
I encourage you to browse the website to explore our diverse programs and degrees. You’ll find the BA degree for general art study, the BFA for tomorrow’s professional artists, art educators, and graphic designers; and the BS degree, which is offered specifically for interior designers.
At Southern Miss, the art and design faculty take great pride in providing students with an in-depth and rigorous education in the visual arts. Additionally, we strive to maintain classes at an optimal size for personalized instruction. We have succeeded with this tradition for nearly one hundred years and it still contributes greatly to our ongoing record of excellence in instruction.
I encourage you to explore the website, and in particular to examine links for the Art and Design alumni, student work, and faculty.
Should you have any questions—or if you’d like to speak with us directly, please contact our office for assistance.
Sincerely,
William Baggett,
Professor and Chair
