The Department of Art has restructured the Master of Art Education by establishing two tracks: 1) studio 2) research.
For students who wish to pursue a studio-oriented degree, this option offers18 semester hours in graduate art studio courses, 12 hours of art education, 9 hours of art history. This track requires a residency with the studio professors at Southern Miss. An additional six hours of research courses are required with this track, if state certification is desired.
Track 2 (33 hours):
For students who prefer a research-oriented degree, this track includes 15 hours in art education, 9 hours in studio work, a 6 hour thesis, or a non-thesis option, and 3 hours of art history.
Requirements for Admission:
Criteria Requirements for admission into the Master of Art Education program include
• A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the applicant’s undergraduate visual arts field of study.
• Evaluation of test scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
• A portfolio review in the applicant’s studio concentration area. Each student must demonstrate studio proficiency appropriate to previous study by presenting a portfolio for review by the graduate faculty and the chair of the Department of Art. The portfolio should be submitted no later than one calendar month prior to the initial semester of application
• Three letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to assess the applicant’s readiness for graduate study
• A two-page statement of personal and professional goals for obtaining the Master’s degree.
Undergraduate prerequisites for the Master of Art Education in the Department of Art and Design are as follows:
• Completion of a bachelor's in art education at Southern Miss or
• Completion of any degree in the visual arts, or
• Satisfaction of Mississippi Class A teacher certification requirements in art
Deficiencies that are identified may be removed with the successful completion of the non-degree credit courses ARE 600 and/or taking undergraduate course work as prescribed by the student's major professor and graduate advisory committee.
Financial Aid:
The Department of Art and Design does offer a limited number of Graduate assistantships. Information on graduate assistantships is available from the Office of Graduate Studies web site at https://www.usm.edu/gradapp/." (The amount of assistantships varies depending on the funding available).
