In September of 2004 Mark Rigsby joined the Department of Art and Design as interim Museum Director/Visiting Assistant Professor. Since his employ Rigsby has taught
ceramics, art appreciation and foundation level courses at Southern Miss.
Rigsby received his BFA from Auburn University in 1991 with emphasis in painting and ceramics and his MFA from The University of Alabama in 1997 with emphasis in ceramics
and sculpture. In graduate school Rigsby began research in the ancient techniques of wood-fired ceramics and atmospheric kiln construction, research that continues to inspire his work today.
After graduate school Rigsby opened a ceramics studio at a non-profit art organization,
the Kentuck Art Center, in Northport, Alabama. While at Kentuck, Rigsby honed his skills
as a fine craft potter, taught community pottery classes and worked as an art instructor for “Kentuck for Kids” and the Tuscaloosa Arts Council, conducting pottery workshops in city
and county schools, and urban housing projects.
Born in Laurel, MS and raised in Alabama, Rigsby now lives in the Dixie Community of
South Hattiesburg where he & his wife Melanie Eubanks own and operate a rural home studio, Black Creek Pottery. Rigsby creates utilitarian wood-fired stoneware. He is a
member of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi, exhibits his work at fine art shows
throughout the country and is represented by numerous fine craft galleries across the southeast.
