Southern Miss Students’ Art Work Awarded In Annual Student Show 2009

student-show_09The Annual University of Southern Mississippi Student Art Show opened Friday, March 26, 2009 at the university’s Museum of Art on the Hattiesburg, Miss., campus. The show honors the next generation of visual artists. The juried exhibit includes a selection of artworks created by art and design majors in various media, including graphic design, interior design, photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, ceramics and drawing.

More than 300 pieces were submitted by students and juried by painter J. J. Foley, in the fine arts area, and Christie Walters, advertising coordinator for the Hattiesburg Clinic, in the graphic arts area.

The interior design jurors included Sara L. Hill, AIA, ASID, architect and interior designer; Lori S. Murry, ASID, commercial interior designer at the Design Group; and interior designer Roy Calvin Eure, Jr., ASID, all of Hattiesburg.

For the exhibit, more than 100 pieces were displayed, including the best pieces chosen in areas of fine arts,
graphic design and interior design.

“It appears from this group of work that these students show true promise in the visual arts,” said Foley, who resides in Long Beach. “In each category I noticed innovative approaches and at the same time, an understanding of the contributions made by artists throughout history.”

Foley, who received her bachelors of fine arts from Southern Miss in 1980, has been a figure painter for 30 years. Recently, she has been making art quilts, using her love of the figure as subject matter.

The Department of Art and Design at Southern Miss has held an annual exhibition showcasing the talents of its students for more than 40 years. The show has long been an integral and much anticipated component of the visual arts curriculum in the department.

Since the incorporation the Museum of Art at Southern Miss in 1997, the annual student show has become one of the most significant displays of emerging artistic talent in the Southeast.

“Already some of these students are close to achieving professional results, and others are gaining confidence and courage in their willingness to forge ahead into difficult areas,” Foley concluded. “These lessons learned now will go with them throughout their lives and careers as visual artists.”
