Jan Laurens Siesling was born in The Hague, Netherlands, and studied the history of art at the Amsterdam Free University. During four years he was assistant professor there, and specialized in 16th century Dutch art.
In 1978 he left his country, moved to France and started a career as a free-lance art historian, art critic, poet and novelist. As a lecturing art historian he was connected to many museums in France. He taught for more than twenty years at the International Program in Strasbourg, France, of the University of Syracuse (NY), and at the International Program at Pontlevoy, France, of Southern Miss. His specialization had now moved towards French and Dutch art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His publications, in French, Dutch and English concern those periods; his novels and poetry are mainly in French.
In 2007 he was appointed director of the art museum at USM.
As an assistant professor he teaches art appreciation and specialized classes.
