Visual Arts Faculty

Ping Xu was born and raised in Shanghai, and began his professional career in 1988.
He has ten years of professional experience in the advertising industry, both in the
United States and China. He began teaching at the university level in 2003.

Ping Xu received both the BFA and the MFA degrees in visual communication. He teaches courses from foundation level to senior level, including visual communication courses in both print and web design. He taught for three years at Kansas State University before he joined the faculty of Southern Miss in the Department of Art and Design.

During his career, he has taught courses in drawing, electronic design, typography, interactive design, and senior studio with collateral design, digital photography, advertising campaign, conceptual thinking and art direction. He currently also team-teaches the senior capstone course with the graphic design faculty.

Ping Xu is a member of Art Directors Club, New York, Type Directors Club, New York, American Advertising Federation, and American Institute of Graphic Arts. Professor Xu is also the curator of Cross Connections '09 International Design Exhibitions. His visual communication research focuses on typographic poster design, digital illustration, advertising design, and interactive communication. He received five ADDY awards (professional) in AAF-MS competition in 2007 and 2008. His multi-cultural background and Sino-American work experience are an asset to his teaching methods.
