The current regulatory environment in the paint and coatings industry has necessitated the development of new and innovative additives for today’s formulator. This presentation will introduce the technology of multifunctional, high performance additives that perform excellently in this environmentally challenging time in the coatings industry. These additives are low or no VOC, APE free materials and are designed to provide regulatory compliance and maximum coating performance. They are non-silicone, non-fluorinated and offer excellent wetting characteristics at low use levels in water based coatings. Additionally, these materials offer good surface tension reduction, excellent pigment wetting characteristics and good substrate wetting. Other properties including good pigment dispersion and enhanced color acceptance are offered by these chemistries. A comparative study with a silicone wetting and leveling agent in an acrylic primer formulation for direct to metal applications will be shown to highlight the performance capabilities of these novel materials. .
