Lanny Venham Synthesis and Screening of New Water Soluble Organometallic Catalysts for CASE Applications
Abstract

A series of experimental water soluble catalysts have been designed and prepared using several metals and different ligand types. Bismuth, zinc, and tin containing catalysts were prepared with various ligands to impart water solubility or dispersibility. The use of typical urethane catalysts in waterborne applications presents many challenges, such as water insolubility and hydrolytic instability. The water soluble catalysts were screened using FT-IR to profile the curing of 2KReaxis Logo waterborne PU formulations. The IR curing profiles were compared to a cotton ball, dust free test to evaluate relative dry times or curing rates. Initial results were obtained for evaluation of catalyst shelf life in some aqueous formulations
