Applying to the Graduate Programs in History

Application is a two-step process.  Some materials, including GRE scores, transcripts, and a completed on-line application, should be sent directly to the Graduate School.  See their web page for more information:
http://www.usm.edu/graduatestudies/planofstudy.php

Other materials should be sent to the Director of Graduate Studies at the Department of History.  These materials include:

  • Three letters of recommendation, including a recommendation form for each (available for download from the web site above);
  • A personal statement of approximately two to three pages that indicates your interest in the program, your career goals, and why you have chosen to apply to Southern Miss;
  • A writing sample, typically an undergraduate research paper or a chapter from a Master thesis.  You should submit a “clean” copy without an instructor’s comments.

Please do not send these materials electronically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the deadline for application to the graduate program?
A: We use a rolling admissions system and therefore we have no deadline for admission to the program.  Applications are evaluated as soon as all materials are received.

Q: What is the deadline for consideration for a teaching assistantship?
A: You must inform the department in writing of your desire to be considered for an assistantship no later than February 1 for the following academic year.  Your application must also be complete by February 1.

Q: What is the minimum GRE score required for admission?
A: We do not have an established minimum score, although higher scores are obviously better than lower ones.

Q: Do I need to know what I will write my thesis on before I apply?
A: No, though you should have a good idea of what area and time period you wish to study.

Q: Can I apply to the Ph.D. program without a Master’s Degree?
A: No.  You must complete the MA or MS degree before applying for the Ph.D. program.

Q: Do I need an undergraduate degree in History to apply to the program?
A: Not necessarily, though if you do not have an undergraduate background in History, the department may ask you to take a series of foundational courses and/or admit you on a conditional basis.

Q: Can I take courses on line?
A: The department does not offer courses on line or though distance education.

Q: What was the first NFL franchise to win four Super Bowls?
A: You should certainly know the answer to this question before contacting the DGS.
